I've said it before, and I'll say it again -- Les Pauls are over rated. Gibson is over rated. Their guitars are usually around 2 grand. Forget that! They're good, but not that good. If you work a normal job, forget Gibson. There are as good and better guitars for cheaper out there, you just gotta' look (listen).
Gibson makes all its money on reputation more than anything. They make deals with established artists and then they make damn sure the guitar those artists get are customized to the artists liking and are as well made as possible. They take their sweet time on it. So of course this established artist will rave about it and play Gibson solely because, for one, they're getting expensive guitars for free and they're getting them customized to their liking. So everone sees that all the top performers play Gibson and think that if they consider themselves a serious musician, they have to play Gibson.
So they work their fool asses off in some minimum wage job forever, until they finally get the money to buy a Gibson. What they don't even realize is that the Gibson they see in the guitar shop is not what their favorite performer plays. It's just a slightly above average guitar sold at an extraordinary price. They slap those things together quickly and sell them to Joe Shmoe who doesn't think anything else will do and doesn't trust his ear rather than what he sees. Oh yeah, and did I mention Gibson's customer service sucks too? Their marketing is some of the best I've seen.

I love the way Gibsons sound. I'm going to buy one when I can afford one. I'm not going to buy a Gibson because Mike plays one, I'm buying one because I have always liked Gibson, I already own an Epiphone. I love that guitar to death even though it's just a low end model.
To the above post* You're the only person I've ever heard bash Gibson, I find that odd.

I think gibson's are over-rated as well...
just because "everyone" uses them, does't make them the best..
Lots of small guitar makers put far more effort into their guitars, and get just as good, if not a better sound.. Gibson is just smart, paying bands to use their guitars..

Exactly. Since they were one of the first two guitar companies to make electric guitars, back in the old days of course all the big acts played them. Now there are a lot more companies making electric guitars so what would be the best marketing angle? All the big stars play them. The difference is back in the day, that's pretty much all there was. Now they pay the rock stars to play them.Spiral Out wrote:Gibson is just smart, paying bands to use their guitars..
chromestar, have you ever really given other guitars a chance? Are you saying that you like the way Gibsons sound because your favorite bands are playing them? Without good music, a good guitar is nothing.
There are plenty of companies that make set neck guitars and spend the time to re-set frets, and make similar body styles and use the same woods and all that good stuff so the real question is what are you really paying that extra grand or two for when you buy a Gibson? A name.
