Unite the Right

Post by doug »

So.

the conservative party and the canadian alliance party have formed a historic pact that will unite Canada's right of centre parties into one single party. they will have a leader elected by December and plan to be ready to challenge the encumbent liberal government by spring.

i won't be voting, obviously, in that election. but for those of you who are canadian, and who will be voting (because even though i tell you not to, you just don't listen to me)... are you going to vote for this party?

do you think they stand a chance of beating the liberals? how do you think this will affect Canada's politikal landscape?[/url]

Oy vey.

Please Canada, no matter how much you may dislike the Liberal government, don't let that party gain power!

Pardon my ignorance, but can someone tell me what is so terribly wrong with this particular party?

narrowing the choices? we had no choice before. the liberals, CA, and PC are all the same anyways. then there's the NDP and they're even worse.

o well. maybe they'll get elected and we can take a turn getting rear-fucked by them instead of by the liberals.

being a canadian is so much fun.

a. they are a political party
b. that means they are composed of politicians
c. politicians are awful

=

this party is awful.

as far as the issues go, they are pretty much your standard euro-"right" wing party: public healthcare, increased military spending (gasp, doubling it from 1 to 2 billion!), decreased taxes (from 52% to 49%), you know, that kind of crap. think republicans but more socially conservative and less military happy.

basically, they're a big government republican party.

the new conservatives on:

same-sex marriage: "the bible says NO!" (mind your own business)
taxes: "we want a flat income tax!" (how about NO income tax)
the military: "canada should be a respected military again! the liberals are ignoring our armed forces!" (thank god! otherwise we'd probably be trying to do something crazy like liberate iraq!)
social services: "people should get off the nanny-state's teat and into the workforce!" (at least we agree on something!)
globalization/free trade: "open up the borders!" (but with restrictions! hows that "free" trade?)

like chris said, think republican only bigger government.

as a budding political scientist and former staunch right winger, i don't think this party has a chance. nobody ever beats the nazis... er liberals... in canada.

wow, i really need to start watching the news again....:freak:

ok, here my shitty memory just thought of something. um, when SOMEONE was becoming the new leader (pretty sure it was the new pc leader, but for all i remember, it could of been Stephen Harper) there was some sort of agreement that they would NOT do this and join the two parties? or am i just fucked up in the head and don't remember anything right? :wtf:

I don't think it will really affect the liberals anyway, PC didnt have that much power. I'm wondering what CA and PC members think.

well most people don't like this alliance because well The Alliance are just plain fucking scary to most of us. These guys are pretty far right, and have strong ties to the church (the old leader is an ex-reverend) They're also all for a flat tax which means that rich will pay only a fraction of their income wihile the poor will pay more, but hey that's fair isn't it? it is when your rich anyways.... They're also the homophobes choice party. Also they're all for more lenient gun laws, they'r emuch more agressive natured. The ex-leader Stockwell day as i said before is a reverend and just plan crazy, so crazy his own party got rid of him. They're also for using referendums to solve every issue that pops up, meaning millions of dollars for each.

As for the PC, meh, i can respect them but they're not my cup of tea.....well i can't respect manitoba's PC but that's because they're complete idiots here, and have managed to lose conservitive power in what used to be a blue strong hold.

as for them being a threat to the Liberals i think they are in a big way, the liberals power has always been that the right wing was divided. May god save us all if this new party leans more to alliance then PC, otherwise we'll be the new rednecks in world politics

thanks, joel, i appreciate that

Man, probably the most fucking stupid politician in the entire country is my good ol neighbourhood MP. Darrel Stinson, put us on the map for asking another MP if he 'wanted to take it outside' during a session in parliment.

He wanted a freaking referendum to keep the definition of marriage to 'one man and one woman'. Only slight problem with that is that it's a legal issue and all, and what the majority thinks doesnt have the slightest affect on what the courts decide what is or isnt right.

first of all, they are not "pretty far right". they're not reactionary. they're right-of-centre. they are canada's most right wing party, that's for sure, but this country does not really have a full political palette... all of our parties are more or less crammed into the middle of the spectrum.

and have strong ties to the church (the old leader is an ex-reverend)

but Stock Day isn't the leader anymore, right? Stephen Harper is and he's not religious. it's true that many members of the party are Christian, but it's not "God's Party" or anything.

They're also all for a flat tax which means that rich will pay only a fraction of their income wihile the poor will pay more, but hey that's fair isn't it? it is when your rich anyways....

If the flat tax was 10% and you make $10,000 a year you pay $1000. If you make $100,000 a year you pay $10,000. The rich are still paying more in this system.

and if taxes could be fair, this is certainly a more fair system of taxation then the current "progressive" slave tax we have on our best producers.

They're also for using referendums to solve every issue that pops up, meaning millions of dollars for each.

I'd rather vote on every issue that comes up then leave it to the goddamn government.

It would be impossible to vote on every issue... most people would just find it a hassle. Thats why we have representitives...

But that's besides the point. These two parties are going to Americanize us. I know Doug et al. will claim that we're all the same anyways with their fancy charts and such, but I think all the Liberals would have to do is show how these guys are going to make us more like the Americans and people will not vote for them.

I know I won't be voting for them.

actually, despite having questioned your sanity, it turns out what you said before was right. In poli sci today, my prof said that the guy that lost the PC leadership race said that he would put his support behind the new leader (sorry can't remember their names) only if the new leader signed an agreement saying that he wouldn't form an alliance between the two parties, and the new leader signed that agreement, so needless to say the guy who lost is pretty pissed off.

they're not going to "amercanize" canada, because they all are in favour of outrageously high taxes and public industries. you think if the PC/CA alliance gets into power they're going to get rid of the CBC? i don't.

the only real issue the PC/CA party will differ from the liberals on is gay marriage. whoop de doo. there is a whole single issue of difference between the two parties.
