My favorite Smurf hidden meaning was the Communist Theory. The Smurfs as a whole were Communist, with Papa Smurf being Russia (note the red hat and how he pretty much rules the other Smurfs.) Gargamel and his cat were America, and always tried to capture and kill the Smurfs.
It's rather humorous. It also works for the Super Mario Bros.
