OLP homework help...

Post by Axtech »

I have to do a project for english in which I have to pick a song/poem/story that represents human suffering...
I figured I could do OLP, as I know their songs best.
What OLP song do you think best represents human suffering?

I (along with a special someone's help, ) thought of these:

Naveed (Come come, bearer of good news)
Blister (Sorta, but not really)
Is It Safe?
Annie (Schoolish, tormented by peers sort of suffering)
Are You Sad? (Same thing as Annie, but less concentrated on school)
Thief (would work on a disease sort of level, but some ass at school stole that idea from me. )

If you can think of one, give some sort of explaination.

Oh, and if you can think of a good reason that I should use any of the above, do explain!

Thanks, all!

(don't think of it as picking a topic for a school project for me. think of it as a game. )

seriously you can do Blister or even Right behind You or even In repair
why you ask. Okay with RBY, sort of talks about a futuristic society . I can't explain. I only know what I get from it. I mean just the lyrics alone seem to talk about some kind of suffering or longing. Longing for a better future, longing for what use to be I don't know.

With in repair. i say that because it talks in away how we deny that we are destructable. How we fall apart and age. this song talks about maing us indestuctable. being able to survive no matter what.

I still say RBY, because I got alot out of that song lyrically and what it meant to me. Also when the towers were attacked last year I couldn't listen to this song for the line(BOMBARDED BY THE ATMOSPHERE< YOU BREATHE YOU CHOKE YOU BREATHE AGAIN)

Then again, i am deep and can find stuff that other people can't. Look at the lyrics and think about what they may be saying to you.
I did a dramtic reading years ago with the lyrics of one of my favorite songs at the tiem. it was erie how I read it and I got a high mark> Good Luck.
R.I.P Joe Strummer
well some things you can explain away, but my heartache's in me till this day

Stealing Babies. Just read the lyrics. They talk a lot about human nature, in a way. I dunno how to describe it, so maybe some one else can help me out here...
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I am using "Are You Sad" for a speech in my communications class. So if some one wants to do my research, please do.

Here are some other suggestions, I won't go into the specific details though (it's your project right?):

-Automatic Flowers
-Story of 100 Aisles
-Consequence of Laughing
-Denied
-Everyone's a Junkie
-Under Zenith (This would be my choice... hint: the title, "Under Zenith" gives some connotation to the type of human suffering... also, "leave a little room for us to breathe", "under your feet the city falls", and "sitting by a frozen man, someone somewhere has to cry" should get you thinking)

I also like your choice for Is It Safe, Blister, and Naveed.

I'd go for "Is Anybody Home," as it's all about being disconnected from people, being stuck alone, trying to make a connection with someone who isn't there.

Edit: Strike that. Go Automatic Flowers. Being overwhelmed to the point where you seek out a pop up book just to see flowers...

Automatic Flowers would be good. How about supersattelite? I've always gotten alot from that song, but I don't know if it would be good for suffering... Blister would work too. Maybe Middle of Yesterday? Everyone forgets about that one. Julia? I'm just thinking of anything.

I'll have to ask my teacher a few things. Like what range of human suffering I can include. I would love to use Annie, as long as I can do human suffering in that tourtured by peers sort of way...

I would praise you if you did Annie. It represents human suffering a simple form. When you go through school, you start to shape into the person you are, and it's just human nature for others to tease you about being unique. The song is great because it shows a child telling an adult about their suffering, and they can both relate. That's how I interpret it anyway.

ya Annie would be a great one to do
even Made of Steel...

I don't think my teacher would have a problem with Annie (if she thinks it fits in well enough with the topic). Her violence is an effect of human suffering.
