It's not a matter of guidelines. The concepts of "mainstream" and "creative" are inversely related. If one simply recreates what has already been created before.....well, they're not being very creative, are they?xjsb125 wrote:I wasn't aware there were guidelines to the creation of art. There's a reason that everyone knows the names of Picasso and da Vinci, but the names of the painters who re-issue replicas of their work escape noteworthiness for a reason.
Therefore, the creative process doesn't have guidelines. It instead is infused with varying degrees of creativity and innovation. The less creative and innovative, the less artistic it is. HIPT is an example of an album that broke absolutely no new ground for the band that created it.....unless one counts inferiority to previous efforts as "new ground."
I think Matt is pretty much right, and I think creativity, complexity, and "mainstream" are all completely unrelated terms. Otherwise you would never find something like this in an art museum:

I do agree that art is to a large degree subjective to the creator, but in the case of HIPT, the band has admitted that their creativity was compromised; molded and genericized by Sony and Bob Rock. Nonetheless, the overall creative worth of HIPT is hard to rank because the songs are so all over the place and there's no uniting theme or flow, which is the complete opposite of other albums like SM.
ALS is a highly worthy entry, while Where Are You and Walking in Circles fail miserably, and songs like Apology and Love and Trust had great potential, but you just tell by listening to them how much they had been compromised and tweaked to try and create "perfect" songs. So many of HIPT's songs seem so rushed, and it feels like some lyrics are just being boringly and mindlessly repeated over and over again in contrast to earlier songs, where you couldn't stop Raine from belting out a catalog of seemingly endless lyrics and where repeating lyrics were saved for strong choruses. Apology's chorus could have been amazing, but Raine's voice is shockingly bored and uninspired, probably with good reason, from being so frustrated during the album's production.
I can't for the life of me decide what I think of Wipe That Smile Off Your Face, but the erratic falsetto is there and it is pretty great. I just find that the song has many other problems that make me loathe it otherwise.

I agree. That album was very compromised. I think between Bob and the label they were told one thing was good by one person and then asked to change it by another person. It was a frustrating time for them. 40+ songs is almost 4 albums worth of material. If I was Raine I would have been like alright... I'm never writing a song ever again, for anybody.... good thing I have Criminology to fall back on. They had to have been beyond burnt out.Strong Alibi wrote:I do agree that art is to a large degree subjective to the creator, but in the case of HIPT, the band has admitted that their creativity was compromised; molded and genericized by Sony and Bob Rock. But come on guys... this thread is about the new album. HIPT is the past and we can't change it... so new stuff... YAY!!!!
“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

I think Healthy's a pretty good collection of songs actually, even if it's not too cohesive, and even though some of the songs might have lost a bit from endless tweaking, rewriting, and rerecording. I think the band mostly speaks negatively of it now because they haven't had enough time yet to disassociate the results from the process.

This. I love Angels/Losing/Sleep, Will the Future Blame Us, Wipe That Smile Off Your Face, Apology, and Al Genina. There isn't a song that I even hate. I definitely agree that the album had soooo much more potential though... When you don't have a song like Vampires not on there, that's just absurd.faninor wrote:I think Healthy's a pretty good collection of songs actually, even if it's not too cohesive, and even though some of the songs might have lost a bit from endless tweaking, rewriting, and rerecording. That would be dependent on the school. Art schools who assist students in harnessing their creativity are doing it right. Art schools who merely teach you to color within the lines, so to speak, are a figurative printing press.Tinman wrote:If this were true, no one would ever attend an art school.
There's no real way to judge creativity, or define it's bounds.carleiu wrote:The problem with simplicity in music is that it runs counter to the creative process. Creativity isn't about staying inside a little box. It's about coming up with something innovative and fresh.
Which previous album does HIPT sound like? Specific songs that make you think "that's the same stuff they were doing on *song from previous album*"? I whole heartedly agree that the writing/recording process was swayed by labels and producers. However, I disagree that it broke no new ground for the band. I think it's a solid album. Hard to give it a central theme, yes, but still there are solid songs. I don't like the variations that WTSOYF and Walking in Circles had from their original live versions, but I think some of the stuff improved, such as Apology.HIPT is an example of an album that broke absolutely no new ground for the band that created it.....unless one counts inferiority to previous efforts as "new ground."

This is not the OLP I fell in love with.
Long time lurker.... long time fan. Just thought I'd say "hello" and throw in my 2 cents. I'm one of the fans who felt like they peaked on SM, and, I'm sad to see the band change so much from what I loved. I won't say that they are less talented, or producing crap, or anything like that. I'll just say that they had created a sound that heavily influenced my life to the point that I can still claim that they are my favorite band after they stopped making music that really spoke to me over a decade ago.
Complexity may not = art, but complexity was a leading attribute in what drew me to the band. I am a fan of complexity, and, while OLP has stated they are not, you cannot blame some fans for missing something that OLP did so very well.
I hate to say it, but after I heard Burn Burn, I thought that OLP was dead to me... but, after hunter's lullaby, i was rejuvenated. HL was not anywhere near OLP, but it had some of the qualities that i felt were missing from many of OLP's newer songs. After hearing a few clips from the the new album, i believe that old magic is also working its way back into their new songs. I do have high hopes, and will continue to look forward to any leaks i can find to continue to boost my enthusiasm.
There's nothing wrong with not liking the music past SM. In some songs past SM, you can hear some layering within the music. It's not to the degree of SM, but still present on some tracks. I think all of us enjoy the depth within Happiness and SM, but I respect the fact that they wanted to try something different to them. I also think that this next album will get back into that depth, not to the extent of Happiness or SM, but the happy medium between simple and complex. Sometimes you have to remove yourself from something for a while to regain your appreciation of it. The Clumsy/SM tour brought them back to it, and helped ignite that appreciation. It will show in the end.

Yeah, some of the shots are out of sync a bit, I might go back and fix it. Didn't realize it until I uploaded it... figures. I used Sony Vegas for the majority and Adobe Premiere for one shot that wouldn't open in Vegas.xjsb125 wrote:Nice edit! The audio is slightly out of sync, but the edits are great.
