“Music doesn’t have the power to change the world. What music does is it changes people, & that changes the world, so to say that music doesn’t change people anymore is just ridiculous. It does everyday. It doesn’t have to be on a political or social level. You could be feeling shitty & it makes you happy & if that’s all it does, it’s changing the world. It’s making it a better place.” ~ Raine Maida

Wow, this is pretty damn close to my dream scenario I threw out there a few days ago so consider me ecstatic. I'm not fearful at all about Raine's performance (beside his lyric recall). I expect arrangement and vocal changes and I'm okay with that.
Mike Turner? *automatic groan*
Joel? Yes, please.
And if they need someone to sit on stage with a boombox and press play for the Kurzweil bits I volunteer my services.

emtee would be cool to have, but it would be more just something for the fans...I mean even if he was just on stage for one song...
I truly think that Steve can easily handle anything that Mike did. Steve probably is the more technically gifted guitarist of the two, even if I personally prefer Mike's atmospheric aura a bit more.
My big concern is Raine's voice. Hitting falsetto is not going to be his problem, since he can still do that fairly well. His natural range has been what's shifted downwards so much. I'm really hoping that warming up his voice can fix things...does anybody have a link to his more recent singing after he has done the warmup?

I definitely agree here. To me, atmosphere is a lot more important than complexity and solos. Atmosphere makes or breaks a song.Illusion wrote:Steve probably is the more technically gifted guitarist of the two, even if I personally prefer Mike's atmospheric aura a bit more.
And yeah, Raine could still hit the notes if he put out a consistant effort throughout these shows. I just hope his regular singing voice does well with the songs. While you don't really think about it while at the show because it's an awesome experience, when you watch the videos of concerts it sounds like Raine's constantly singing with a clogged nose and like he has stuff in his throat. Hopefully this new warm-up will help him. While I doubt it will be as strong as his old counter-tenor, I hope it still sounds good.

Here's a (very excellent HD quality) Youtube video of Raine doing OMA on December 6 (or at least thats when it was uploaded):Illusion wrote: My big concern is Raine's voice. I think OMA is one of the worst songs in their current setlist for him to sing. I hate to sound harsh but it's quite clear that he pretty much talks through the chorus instead of sings, and his voice just sounds like it's about 5 octaves too low and his voice is off-tune and shaky. They really need to drop this from their setlist, I hate to say it but they're ruining the song. People who hear this first live won't go out and buy or download it.
But I think songs from SM and Clumsy that haven't been played since their respective studio releases are bound to have Raine singing more closely to the original falsetto voice, because the original recording is all Raine's heard of the songs in years, so it's going to be his only influence.
Exactly. Atmosphere comes first. Steve does amazing solos but when you just tack them on like in Escape Artist and Paper Moon it just doesn't work rightMindsOnLoan wrote:

Talking about Raine's voice.

It's CRAZY how he's voice has changed since then. I don't know but even back then, I have never heard him singing like he did in this video... his voice sounds awkward.

Yeah I've been listening to that video for the past few hours actually. It truly is amazing how much his voice has changed... and when you listen to how dirty and grungy it is in that video you can kinda see how his voice has been wore out over the years. I think that is a huge factor. If I sing that grungy my throat is sore in 5 seconds. But yeah that Let You Down version absolutely blows away the studio version. So much energy.Fabio_kun wrote:Talking about Raine's voice.

As much as OMA has changed, saying they are ruining it is ridiculous. Yes, Raine sings it much more mellow and low, blah, blah. It's just personal opinion, but OMA is a song that as long as Raine is singing fucking rocks.
Don't jump down my throat yet. I DO PREFER THE ORIGINAL BY A LONG SHOT. But if they drop that song from the setlist I will be quite disappointed. It's one of the songs that makes the band go apeshit in terms of stage present. I absolutly loved seeing it live.

Heh, funny, I'm almost the opposite of that. I can forgive general grammar errors because some people are just unintentionally ignorant of the differences between "than" and "then", etc. But IMO people who don't capitalize words when necessary just give the appearance of laziness. No offense, of course.laurel wrote:Please note that my name is not capitalized either.
I don't care about caps. Just spelling and grammar. Not sure why...but caps just aren't an issue to me. And heck, sometimes, I just prefer the look of words when they aren't capitalized! Like my name!
LOL
I can see how words sometimes look better when they're not capitalized, though. I mean, look at "iPod"...
