Speaking of AYD, this is an excerpt from Steve's interview, I don't know what to think about it:

Steve: (Monkey Brains) is one we are really proud of. Our bass player was messing around on guitar and it just felt so good jamming it even though it felt a little loud, a little rougher that the other stuff. I knew we were okay when I played a bunch of songs for my mom and she liked that one. So I’m like, it’s not toooo crazy if my mom likes it.

Really??! Holy hell!, OLP's music has ALWAYS been crazy! Now we need mom approval?? MOM APPROVAL FOR OLP??? Do you think Steve's mom likes Consequence of Laughing, Stealing Babies...Car Crash? Damn it's like they did a 180 with their musical outlook here

and also why should they be making music weird? shouldn't they be making the music that they want to make.. regardless of the normality of what they produce? just a thought.

By weird I mean creative, and standing out. Creative isn't one specific sound, otherwise the word would defeat it's own purpose. I'm saying that they shouldn't be afraid of doing something a little weird, or something that really stands out from the rest of what we're hearing in music. Yes, they should make the music they want to make, but with a band who has stepped into new territory on every release (whether that new territory was good or not), I would think they would be more open to making something strangely beautiful.

ah ok, was just confused with what you meant by 'weird'. but yeah completely agree with you. but to be fair i wouldn't assume they'd come to the conclusion to scrap anything if their mother's didn't approve of it, ha. although saying that.. maybe steves mother is a musical visionary!

and also by taking into consideration the music we've heard so far from burn burn, ayd perhaps excluded, they seem to have ventured into new creative territory. time will tell i guess.

I agree. At first a lot of these songs sounded like we were in for Healthy II, but I'm happy to say with the full songs I've heard live or the album versions (those being Paper Moon, Monkey Brains, and The End Is Where We Begin) this album has definitely taken on it's own life. It seems like it will be the band's best effort since 2000.

Yeah my mom likes the old OLP stuff too (mostly the quiet music like Clumsy and Thief, but she loves Raine's paranoid voice)... but my point was that Steve is acting like they don't want to make any music that isn't somewhat familiar or mainstream.

Just the way Steve says, "but we knew we were okay when... my mom liked it", as if they needed approval just because Monkey Brains was so different. They certainly never cared about mainstream approval for songs like "All My Friends", that song would grate on the ears of most mainstream-listeners, but is amazing to those who are honest in appreciating music.

I go on road trips a lot with my mom for whatever, and I like to plug in my iPod. She keeps telling me she only likes "Top 40!" stuff. "Shanae, I don't know what this is..." "Mom, it was HUGE in the nineties!" "Well I don't like it. Was it top forty?" "This song was a big deal!" "What is it?" "...Superman's Dead!" "Turn it off..."

Sigh.

She gets Bon Jovi and FOB mixed up on the radio. Hopeless. *Shakes head.*

She hates a lot of my OLP. Except Innocent, pretty much.

My mom's not crazy about OLP's music (she comments when she likes music, and she never comments when I put them on the radio), but she went to a show a couple years ago (because I'd bought two tickets and then my friend dropped out) and adored them live. She said she could just tell they really enjoyed playing, and I guess that got to her in a good way.

I've got my mom into OLP too. With the First Four in regular rotation in the car, along with Healthy making random appearances, she didn't really have the choice of not liking them lol.

And I just love how that article got us on a "Moms: And Their Opinions on OLP" discussion.

Am I the only one who gets irked when I see an reviewer or interviewer say their favorite album is Gravity? Or how much AYDWSML is overhyped when we know the album has gold on it like Monkey Brains and Paper Moon?

I get annoyed when interviewers love Gravity, or say things like, "The band left their traditional, paranoia ridden, alternative sound, and took on a much more enjoyable sound that plays beautifully in the listener's ear..." etc.
