Quote by raine maida concerning OLP's music

Post by johnpeterson »

hi i'm new here... I just read this quote by raine about their music, but i've also heard some of their new songs... and the new songs still sound like their gravity/hipt songs... so what do you suppose this quote means??:

[quote="Raine's Interview""]Interviewer: It seemed like you were trying to become a more direct lyricist even before this album - the last few Our Lady Peace albums weren't nearly as metaphorical as what you were doing on Naveed or Spiritual Machines.

Raine: Yeah, I know. That's something that I'm struggling with. I might be able to get back to that place. I think that was definitely Bob Rock trying to push me in that direction. I'm not sure how comfortable I am with that, to be honest. I think what this solo record does for me is it's given me a way to do that, but in a much more comfortable setting. I'm not sure - it might be a combination of the music in the background supporting the words - but yeah. I listen to those records that you just mentioned, and yeah: For rock music, I'm more apt to do that. I like more hiding behind the music a bit and not being so direct. I don't know. Hopefully this gets that out of my system and I can get back to a little bit more of the creative poetic scenes on some of those records.Yeah, I know. That's something that I'm struggling with. Firstly, welcome nub! Secondly, I fixed your post because you put Raine's quote twice. (Its ok. Nub mistake. I know!)

I believe Raine is trying to say that Bob Rock was a putz. He makes creative individuals into the same generic, recycled, turd-worthy shit we hear every day on the radio. And I hope that Raine getting the chance to do his solo....will now transfer that energy into the next album by the band.

Time will tell. Thankfully the band got away from a lot of the political bullshit created by a lot of over-achieving attention whore music producers.

Thanks guys for the welcomes.

Neo: yeah i can see how bob rock could have influenced them in the wrong way. glad he's out of the picture then. but their new song "the right stuff" really doesn't sound "metaphorical" or "creative poetic" as raine has mentioned in the interview... i just hope some other songs give us some of that.

By the way, love your house avatar.

They also have to sell cd's though, they need at least one good catchy song to push units out. Hell Id take "The Right stuff" as a single as long as we get a few kick ass songs. Fuck one kick ass song would make up for the last two cd's to be honest. I' am hoping though that "The Right Stuff" and the others don't go through the same punishment as the last bit of live materials, aka Not Afraid, maybe it will have the opposite effect and become even better in the studio version. I just want new music, some of my fav bands have released stuff already last year, and now a few this year

Guns N' Roses- Chinese democracy
Metallica- DM
AC/DC- Black Ice
Muse- soon
Pearl jam- soon
OLP- soon

So, does this mean that Raine isn't going to write songs for Hillary Duff anymore? Or perhaps with the high amount of lyrical camal poo in these new songs, perhaps he is now writing for Britney Spears.

I sure hope so. Perhaps some radio play.

I onced asked Raine how he and Chantal came to write for other people. He said people approached them.. I think after the Avril cd they were approached by alot of artist. In many interviews they ( or at least Raine) has said they can only work with someone if they have some part of a song written-whether it be music or a lyric. Believe it or not. Raine and Chantal have become known as Production husband and wife team Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida. I think that is one of the reasons for them staying in L. A. I asked Raine years ago why he was moving to California. He said for work. Song writers get so much more then an artist ..

Here is the actual quote from Music COnnection Magazine

Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida, Songrwriting/Production team
“We prefer for artists to come in and start with something that they wrote,” Raine explains. “From the beginning there’s an essence of that person in the song. Something intrinsic to an artist’s ability is a great place to start. Even if it’s just a guitar part. At least we start in a place that Raine and I as artists would not have began.”

I feel love, I feel a power. It comes to me in the darkest hour. And I want to feel it again

I completely believe that B-Rock had a great deal of influence over decisions they made with their recent material. Bobby's commercial. He knows how to make the same generic sound that people will still listen to. Don't get me wrong... He's produced for some great bands. However, I just don't believe he was a wise move for OLP. OLP's lyrics and sound have always been a bit more unique. Creative. Risky. Gravity didn't take a single risk from what we generally hear on modern rock radio. Maybe "Bring Back the Sun" still had the older feel, but that's about it.

I'm nervous. I know it's too early to tell and we have no idea what songs will/won't make the new album. I will agree with you in saying that "The Right Stuff" does not give that old appeal that the band used to creative. It's catchy! Damn is it catchy. I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics but I can tell its going to get stuck in my head for days when the studio single is released. I'm doing my best to remain optimistic that it's too early to tell. The first single is meant to be catchy. Guess we'll see.....

Oh and thanks for the avatar props... Hugh Laurie is the shit!

I don't think we'll ever know "why". I mean, I guess it was probably for convenience and cos they were friends? But that's still kinda weird.

Oh right, and that. Wouldn't it make her more of a nanny if she was living WITH them? Last I checked, babysitters only come take care of the kiddies when you're not home.
