dickslapped by the canadian federal government

Post by starvingeyes »

the montreal grand prix has been saved.

as many of you know, canada passed a bill in 1997 barring tobacco companies from sponsoring major sports events.

since then, many races and events, such as the vancouver indy, the LPGA canadian tour dates, and dozens of cultural events such as symphony orchestras, arts festivals etc. have either been abandoned or otherwise afflicted as a result of revenue lost due to this ban.

F1 racing recently announced that due to the ban, they can not afford to hold the race in montreal unless they are compensated for the revenue loss.

in order to save the race, the provincial government of quebec, the municipal government of montreal and the federal government of canada have all pitched in to offer up $12 million US in order to meet the demands of F1's governing body.

what a bunch of dumb fucking assholes.

no, it's stupid.

1. they wouldn't have to spend any of my money to keep the race afloat had they not banned tobacco sponsorships in the first place, which is also both stupid and wrong.

2. this is more blatant quebec favortism. what about all the other events, outside of quebec that were adversely affected by this law?

3. your "economic impact" point only holds up if you assume the people of montreal are going to take that 80 billion, and either spend it in the states or put it in the bank and never touch it again. if they don't spend it at the gp, they will spend it somewhere else.
