Going to University out of province
Going to University out of province
ok. i'm wanting to leave my province (saskatchewan) and go to the Maritimes for university. normally no big deal, right?
wrong.
excuse the lengthiness, but it leads up to what i'm getting at.
i've encountered problems from the get go, the first major obstacle being my school guidance counsellor. he has neglected to look up anything on the many, very highly reputed schools out east, and when i went for help from him...i got nothing. he knew nothing, and there was not a single offer on his part to help me with my search for universities.
now, flash forward a number of months. here i am now, having researched maritime universities to death, figuring everything out, and i just submitted my application to acadia, in nova scotia. i went to my guidance counsellor yet again to get needed transcripts, course lists, etc. what i got instead was a 40 minute talk on the comparisons between the maritimes and the cheapness here. i was even told that 'you'll be converted yet', referring to the fact that he wants me to stay in saskatchewan for school.
i don't want to stay in saskatchewan. i have my heart absolutely set on the maritimes, and i desperately want to get into acadia. but the problem i'm having is that everything in my damn province is trying to keep me here. saskatchewan is going through a huge stage of trying to get young, educated people to stay in here. they're creating oppurtunities galore for people staying here..but young people that wish to leave the province for school are being totally neglected. my province is dragging me down in my quest to make my life what i want it to be. i find this unnaceptable.
in my school, every university presentation, every workshop, everything that prepares you for university is based in saskatchewan, or at the odd time, the surrounding prairie provinces. now, i'm in a big city, and a big school in the city. you'd think they'd in someway try to accomodate everyone.
but that's not so. i have had no help with my search for a university, no help with the application process, no help choosing what's best for me.
even our scholarship booklet is the booklet meant for institutes in saskatchewan. i came out of the thick booklet with about 4 possible scholarships. every other one was aimed at those staying in sk.
all in all, i'm fed up with this. i am stressed beyond belief because i have had to do every last thing concerning my university education myself. i just wanted some help from my school, from my government, from someone, with all this stuff, like everyone staying here. but that's not happening, because i'm leaving the province, so i'm not considered worthwhile.
i don't know if this topic has come up with anyone else. but tell me what you think. let me know if you're experiencing, or have experienced this. let me know if i just have my head shoved up my butt.
wrong.

Well, I have kind of experienced this. Although I live in Utah. I went to a small school here, but I'm surrounded but the majority of the population of Utah. Every single course or any kind of help was designed to tell you go to about four different school, and one in particular. I ended up giong to that one in particular because they made every opprotunity available for me. It's cheap, close, of fairly good repute, and they pay for my education But I hate it, I hate it with my heart and soul. All I can say is that if you want out, get the hell out! But if you have to settle, don't worry, you have alot of college ahead of and can transfer out. There is virtually not help for me in deciding which schools to go to and which ones are best for each major, cause they all say they are the best. So I'm struggling too, and I'm ending up having to stay here until next fall. Which is like a fucking life time away. But I WILL get away! Good luck, try searching the web for other students that are from where you are, maybe they can help you.

nope, as long as your Canadian the price stays the same.
I can't wait until the day schools are over-funded and the military is forced to hold bake sales to buy planes.

no cass
just out of country
that fact has saved my lame ass a lot of money
lori.. just goto the website of the uni you want and follow the directions for transfer students and the info they have.. then email the school about other info etc
as for the out of province thing.. canada as a whole is losing a lot of its best and brightest due to taxes etc.. its about time the govts started doing something.. but in this case its just going too far

As someone who isnt from the maritimes, but an atlantic province, I have to preach to you about coming here. It will rock.
But 'cause I am weird I wanna say that you should look at MUN (memorial university of Newfoundland) cause its dirt cheep. about $1500 a semester. and concidering how many courses and what not are offered here you take a look at it.
enough advertising, here everything we are told about here are universities and collages that are in our area. I mean I do plan on going to MUN but it would be nice if we were given a little more.
Since a lot of people do go to other provinces though, info is a little more avaliable because they are expecting it. You have to do a lot of searching but our counsellor is a little more prepared.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.
