Exactly it........and it also depends where you live. (i.e. live in a town where the biggest crime is petit theft, orrrrr live in South Central L.A. where drivebys are an everday occurance).

Another reason I'm glad I don't live in Canada. Education isn't what it is down here. if .02 people out of 1000 is murdered in Canada that is NOT a 2% chance. That is 2 hundreths of a person in 1000 is killed. In other words 1 in every 50,000 people is murdered. How is that 2%?? 2.5 of every 50,000 is murdered in the US. Now I'm sure you're sayin "well thats a 2 and a half more chance of being killed in the US as compared to Canada". However 2.5 out of 50,000 is not what I would call good odds. I live in a city and no one I know has ever been murdered. Most murders are the result of gang vs. gang or the result of drugs. If you don't get involved in that crap your chances go down exponentially.

Quick
I lock my doors all the time. I'm so paranoid, but I guess that stems from the fact that Winnipeg does have a high crime rate (murder capital of Canada). I was so surprised when the Canadians on BFC said that they didn't lock their doors. It's ludacris to me.

Homicide rates is in a direct relationship with population density. (people per square mile)
If you compare cities of the same density in Canada with those of the same density of the US, the homicide rates are nearly identical.
Because the people are so spread out in Canada, naturally the homicide rates are lower.
There is no difference between the US and Canada other than an imaginary boundary.
