Timeline

Post by Axtech »

We were in philosophy class, talking about time and quantum theory, among other things. I asked Andrew, "Have you ever read the book Timeline? It's by the guy who wrote Jurassic Park."
"Nope ... wait! Is that the one where they go back in time to the middle ages?"
"In a few words, yes."
"I saw the book, but I didn't get it because the idea sounded kind of lame."
"Well, I read it a long time ago, and it wasn't bad. It wasn't a great book, but it had some really cool stuff about quantum theory and using wormholes in quantum foam to travel to other universes. They go to a universe identical to ours except that they're still in the middle ages. There's all the cool stuff about how there's infinitive universes, and that no two are exactly the same, but how the differences can sometimes be completely neglegable."

Then I rented The Italian Job yesterday. I popped it in (I was watching it upstairs, on VHS) and let the previews play. I wasn't really paying attention to it, and I saw that the first preview was for some movie set in the middle ages. Meh, whatever. I looked back at the TV a few second later, and saw an exploding wall of glass with water pouring out. I thought "That's odd... I know what that's from..." Then it hit me. Middle ages. Some lab with glass walls filled with water. TIMELINE!

People, this movie is going to be amazing. If they keep all the quantum theory stuff in it, I can't see anything that won't be amazing about this movie. The book wasn't great, but it is the perfect type of book to turn into a movie. There is nothing in the book that can't be converted to film (in a lot of books a lot has to be left out because it's not in the main storyline. that's not the case here.).

I personally can't wait.

Meh, if ye speak of wormholes, it should only be about Donnie Darko. The end.
I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.

I'm a huge Crichton fan (in fact I've read most of his books including Timeline), I really don't know what to think of the movie, other than I'm probably gonna wind up seeing it.

This is cool though because they actually use the wormholes to travel to another universe.

I just hope they don't leave that stuff out and do something like "We've made a time machine. You [the morons that make up most of the north american market] don't need to know the details. *pat pat*"

they just better have hot chicks in the movie. especially in the middle ages, wearing those girdles that make their boobs pop out the top of their dresses.

They better not mess up the technicalities of time travel, I mean once you put time travel and movies together you automatically think "cheesy." On the other hand if they make the time travel aspect of the movie believable, i think we're in for a great movie.

Knowing that the essential stuff will be in it, I have two conditions:

1. It must include a full explaination of the quantum theory and time travel.

2. It must include a loud and rather insane randition of the variation of the John Denver song "Take Me Home Country Road"

quantum foam, take me home
to the place I beloooong!

Wow, I guess I am the only one that thinks that John Denver is Martina Navratalova's body double. That's what I think of when I hear John Denver. Oh yeah, and a moron that shouldn't have been flying a plane. That too.

It's from the book. A delirious old man sings it.

Besides, that John Denver's full of shit, man.

I've heard nothing but bad shit about Timeline the movie. I dunno if they kept the quantam theory idea in it, but I do know for a fact that they're depending on Paul Walker to actually carry the movie. I've also heard it does fuck up everything that made the book good, and that this may be the movie that ends Richard Donner's career, based on his fucking it up. Which is sad, because he made Goonies and Lethal Weapon... and for a bad adaptation of a book to end his career, it's a real "mighty have fallen" thing.

In which case, go back to Donnie Darko for the amount of theorizing, or go out and see Mystic River for a good adaptation -- or just wait until Master & Commander for another good adaptation.

Or, you could just rent Adaptation. :P

I don't care how much quantum physics there is, time travel is cheesy!!! :cuss:
it's should be banned.

Goodbye you liar,
Well you sipped from the cup but you don't own up to anything
Then you think you will inspire
Take apart your head
(and I wish I could inspire)
Take apart your demons, then you add it to the list.
