That's fine if the gov't doesn't want to recognize marriage as a legal issue. But they should either recognize all marriages or no marriages. If they recognize only straight marriages, that's discrimination in my book...same as if they didn't recognize inter-racial marriages.

actually i never understood what was wrong with multiple spouses, really if the spouses know and don't care what's wrong with it? It's not like they're being slaves, the man just happens to have more then one permanent lover.......better then doing it behind his wifes back. Infact how is it that much diffrent then a "open" marrige?

In case of hospitalization, the partner has no legal rights to vist their partner in the hospital, or make decisions regarding life support and the like. Domestic benefits are also an issue; a person can provide insurance through work to their spouse, but with no legal backing of the union, these benefits are rarely extended to significant others. Also, if the couple does adopt, the issue of custody becomes a messy one if only one parent is on the adoption certificate due to a refusal to recognize the union between both parents.
There are legal reasons for getting married.

Actually...two of my friends are bi...we son't think any lower of them. And my town once had a pool hall ran by two dykes who even slow danced whenever they had dances thier, but no one went was really mean to them. They are getting married sometime. So I dont think there are too many homophobias...even Eminem defends them by saying when he says fag or gay in his songs he dont mean homosexual.

ok... here goes... same-sex marriages can go ahead and be legal, *but* same-sex couples should not be allowed to adopt. to properly raise a child there needs to be two parents, a male and a female. and yes i know someone of you may have grown up with only one of them and turned out fine, but can you imagine what the world would turn into if same-sex couples began raising children?? initially it would be a small effect, but eventually, homosexuals would begin to be more and more and the heterosexuals would become less and less, thus the population would go down... im talking over a *LONG* period of time...but anyways back to the main point, samesex marriage is alright in my book but no adoption of children by them!

Yes, I'm glad you brought this up. This is where problems start to occur when it comes to bending the rules on marriage. Say multiple marriages is legalized. This would be quite catastrophic for insurance companies. They would have to increase premiums in order to cover all of the different cases. A man with 7 wives could cover all of them on his policy. Also, imagine the custody battles that would be involved for children if any one of the wives decides to split. I'm worried that if the government becomes too lenient on marriage policies that it could have a negative impact on the economy.

You don't become gay because your parents are gay. Just like you're not straight just because your parents are straight. The child of a same-sex couple would likely be taught, more than anything else, tolerance and acceptance. It's not like a gay couple would force their child to be gay. They of all people know what it's like to have to pretend you're something you're not.

OR... the insurance company could just endorse the policy to exclude more then one wife.
the divorce issue would be i think largely unchanged. if one wife got a divorce, the custody battle would be between her and her ex-husband and his six other wives.

I'd allow gay couples to adopt children. It's not like the child couldn't get a female or male role model from another source such as uncles, aunts, grandparents, family friends, etc. I don't think there have been any proven studies saying that a child is more likely to become a homosexual because the parents are homosexuals. And I must agree with Rob, that if anything the child would learn more tolerance, and be more respectful towards others more than a child from a hetero family.

Just a quick question...is this thread about gay couples or people with multiple couples? I mean you can think what you want about either, but how are they on the same thread? I don't really see a similarity between the two...

I don't think it's that they don't believe in it. It's more like they don't enjoy doing it
No but seriously being gay doesn't mean you're against pro-creation, it just means that the system is working against you. I'm sure one of them could become pregnant through Artificial Insemenation (sp?) in a female couple's case and often that's what happens.

This is great. Gay people can get married and adopt children, that would be fine. I couldn't care less. If it makes them happy, then more power to them.
What bothers me is that everyone here complains for equality, but people are against poligamy and won't let people smoke. Don't you ever use the word "equal" unless you want to have all people have the same rights. Until then, you're just talking out your ass because you don't believe in equality, you just want things that could benefit you.

I faced death. I went in with my arms swinging. But I heard my own breath and had to face that I'm still living. I'm still flesh. I hold on to awful feelings. I'm not dead... My chest still draws breath. I hold it. I'm buoyant. There's no end.
The whole "gay people adopting a child seems hypocritical" seems pretty out there. Only complete idiots should not be allowed to have a kid.
The fact that a homosexual man or woman does not want to involve themselves in mixed-gender intercourse has nothing to do with another part of human nature, raising offspring. Why else are there things like "maternal (and paternal) instinct"? It's not like homosexual people cannot have these desires, because, technically, the desire is inbred into them. As far as most scientists are concerned, anyway, your sexual choice tends to fall into your genes, as well as all the other facets of your personality fall, including the desire to raise children and when (or if) it will actually begin to become active.
And, on the topic, the idea of allowing people to run away from their problems, just to be "with their own kind" is reversing the whole idea of integration that has taken a few decades to work. So I'm against the idea of a gay-only school; it's like saying "hey, you don't need to actually deal with people who don't understand why you are the way you are".
And the Pope and Bush's thoughts on how gay marriage shouldn't be legal... well, we all already know that the Pope is old and conservative and apparently hasn't read the Bible in quite a long time... because same-sex marriages are NOT A SIN. And Bush stated "we're all sinners"... unless, of course, we don't believe in the idea of sin. Like me. You know, part of the non-Catholic America.
As far as I'm concerned, to keep equality, everyone should be allowed to do what they want to do to themselves and others who consent to this under a "normal" mental and emotional state (past 18, anyway). If you would like to take red-hot rubber dildoes and shove them up your butt while jerking off to football games using a peanut-butter knife... so long as you're not causing unwanted problems to others that would want to come into contact with you... GO RIGHT AHEAD. Have sex with another guy. Have sex with a guy and a girl. Have sex with yourself. Smoke weed. Take crack. Shoot heroin. If it makes you happy, do it. But give me my privacy, and let me do my thing so long as it isn't directly affecting you. Okay?
