It's where everyone takes their computers to a friends house, get them networked up, and play games for three or four days straight.
Between all of us, we get about 5 computers to a network and 5 consoles hooked up to TVs (Xbox, Gamecube, PS2, Dreamcast, and SNES).
Take a bunch of nerds, add caffeine, no sleep, a shit load of games, and stir.
That's a LAN party.
