That is just the marines celebrating. I can see how it can be misconstrued and that is why the flag was replaced with the Iraqi flag. The US flag that was used was one from the Pentagon that was in there during the 9/11 attacks. It was a message to Saddam and those like him that terrorist acts like that won't be taken lightly. It in no way means the US is planning on conquering Iraq.

Obviously I'm operating under the assumption that Hussein helps fund terrorism.

Know what? I heard that Iraq was going to be divided into three separate parts.

My opinion hasn't changed on the topic of war. Even if the US does successfully "liberate" [assimilate] the Iraqi citizens, the end doesn't justify the means.

It is my response to thirdhour's assumption that the US is trying to take away the Iraqi's customs and way of life.

It's happened before and it will happen again. Why is it that America seems to think that all nations in the world aspire to becoming the US?

one example: haiti- sweatshop labour opened the door to corporations exploiting the people for their own advantage.

This war is opening up the market to american companies that through marketing, influence greatly the society of a nation. example: there are mcdonalds now, all over the world. great, its convienant, but in the meantime, the people are losing their cultural cuisine and eating habits. When people ho longer live in a nation that has a strong sense of culture and is not just a stepping stone for american corporations, then, yes i think the US has taken away their way of life.

The thing is, its subtle. I'm not sugesting that the american forces are going to go tommorow destroying iraqui flags and putting up american ones in their place, i just think this is a huge invitation to corporations to come in and exploit the people of iraq. once that happens, its going to become nearly impossible to change things back to the way they were.

the sweatshop thing is horrible. i won't argue that. but as for Mc Donalds all over the world, the thing about that is that Mc Donalds would conduct a survey at that country and see if it would be profitable for them to build a restraunt there. the response from those surveys show that yes, people would like a Mc Donalds in their country and yes, they would go and eat there. this makes for a profitable and welcomed enviroment in this country, thus putting one there would make money for the company. and after all money is what companies are after. good companies maximize their profits legally, not through sweatshops.
Whenever death may surprise us,
let it be welcome
if our battle cry has reached even one receptive ear
and another hand reaches out to take up our arms.

Nobody's gonna miss me, no tears will fall, no ones gonna weap, when i hit that road.
my boots are broken my brain is sore, fer keepin' up with thier little world, i got a heavy load.
gonna leave 'em all just like before, i'm big city bound, your always 17 in your hometown

Haiti??

Want some history on Haiti?

Haiti was occupied WELL before US even looked at it. It was occupied by France and because of its abundance of trade goods its economy BOOMED. So well, in fact, that France shipped in slaves to fill all the jobs created. Unfortunately, this caused a revolt and overthrow of France, leaving the country in Anarchy. It was at this point that instability and extreme poverty occurred. Not until THEN did the US enter to help calm the situation, which actually helped quite a bit, creating better roads, hospitals, and homes for the people. But the people still felt controlled, and so the US LEFT. Since the US left, things once again, became horrible, with mass murders and rigged elections. Not until 1991, did the US once again go in to help fix problems that weren't caused by them but by Haiti's history itself. Believe it or not, any company that goes into Haiti, be it a sweatshop or otherwise, helps the people. You call that taking away their heritage? What heritage? You mean the constant struggle between the Catholic Church and the Voodooists? You really think they want that back?
