White Teacher Should Not Teach Black History?

OBERLIN, Ohio, Updated 1:33 p.m. EDT July 28, 2003 -- A group of parents said they will fight a possible decision to allow a white teacher to lead classes in black history at Oberlin High School.
NewsChannel5 reported that a scheduling conflict could cause the district to reassign the black teacher who has taught the course for seven years.
Using a white teacher at Oberlin High School would send the wrong message to black students, said A.G. Miller, an associate professor of American and African religious history at Oberlin College.
"The message is that we are not concerned about the importance of your historical background ... that that is less important than a schedule conflict," said Miller, whose three children graduated from Oberlin High School.
Jaqui Willis, a black Oberlin parent, said the teacher is a role model and that removing him from the class would be detrimental to students.
The parents have protested the move to the school board, but the district's superintendent, Beverly Reep, has not commented on the case. Reep told parents at a school board meeting that scheduling issues would be addressed this week.
Schools and community leaders in the Cleveland area are split over the issue of whether blacks should be the only ones to teach black history.
In Cleveland, white and black teachers teach black history. A black teacher teaches black history at Shaker Heights High School, but a white teacher handles classes on oppression and human relations, both which deal extensively with race relations and slavery.
Little research has been done to determine whether same-race teachers lead to higher achievement by minority students. Ronald Ehrenberg, director of Cornell University's Higher Education Research Institute, said many researchers steer clear of the topic out of fear of being attacked.
Michael Williams, interim director of Cleveland State University's black studies program, said schools should choose a black teacher if that person is most qualified, not just because the teacher happens to be black.
If two teachers are equally qualified, Williams gives the edge to the black teacher.
"That person still has the advantage of the culture," said Williams, who is black. "They understand the nuances of the culture."
Phyllis Yarber Hogan, a member of the Oberlin Black Alliance for Progress, said a white teacher wouldn't be well-suited to teaching students about subjects like slavery.
"When you talk about slavery, students need to understand it is not our fault," she said. "Our ancestors did nothing wrong to be enslaved.
"How do you work through that when the person teaching it is the same type of person who did the enslaving?"

So European History teachers can only be white, because the original population there was white, not black. I mean, bitch for equality, equality is what you get. So if there's a class that deals with white people, a black person better not teach the class or white parents should boycott it. Oh wait, no, that's racist. I forgot. There's no such thing as a racist black person, right?
The last line of this story is fucking disturbing. Here's a message I would love to tell every black person that has a problem with whites.
Get the fuck over it. I did not enslave you. My parents did not enslave you. My grandparents did not enslave you. In fact, you're not a fucking slave. You're just a pathetic person that feels all whites should pay for the past. My great grandparents came over to this country in 1910, long after slavery ended. Go ahead and hate all white people, but treat me differently. My family heritage had nothing to do with this, so shut the fuck up and move the fuck on. It's been about 150 years since slavery ended, it's time you move on. In fact, how about this? When you can tell me the name of the last family member of yours to be enslaved, then you can bitch and moan about it all you want. Until then, shut the fuck up. And if you have such a problem with whites, go back to Africa. You'll fit in nicely over there, they're "your" people. Assholes.

I think that is ridiculous. If the person is properly qualified to teach the course it shouldn't matter what color or culture they are. That's like saying only Italians can teach Roman History or only Japanese can teach Japanese history. That's bullshit. Everyone is equal and everyone should have equal opportunity if they are qualified.

I agree with Alan for the most part...
I really...hate how there's STILL segregation because people still get caught up in skin colour... There's a huge cultural divide and we keep ourselves seperated.
I remember watching VH1s 200 Greatest Pop Culture Icons thing, and when Tiger Woods and the Williams sisters came up, people would ALWAYS mention how golf and tennis, respectively, are white dominated sports and that they're very special because they're skilled AND black. WHO CARES if they're black? They're talented. That's all that should matter.

it's just as racist to keep a white person from teaching it because it was "those People" that enslaved them. It's the same as a white man saying, it's "those people" that rob convience stores and steal cars. It's totally racist, infact it alsmot says something if a white man is teaching it, it shows that we don't agree with it.

ya who cares who teaches the kid. A teacher is a teacher is a teacher. As long as they are qualified to teach, they should be able to teach. I would assume that the white teacher isn't just some math teacher they threw in there who knows nothing about history.

Wow Alan, I totally agree with you for once.
If that's the case, then I guess black teachers cannot teach European History period. Ridiculious.
I know this will uhm...open up a whole new can of worms, but I feel the same w/ the the Native Americans. I just don't get why they continue to get special treatment after all these years. Shit, what happened sucked alot of ass, but why can't they just move w/ the flow? Other cultures manage to keep theirs and still not get the special shit they get.

So let me get this straight, if black people can't teach white kids then it's racist against blacks, but if white people teach black kids then it's... also racist against blacks?

I think if the teacher teaches it factually then whats the problem with it. On a side note seems african american culture is taking over in the US over the past 5-10 years. I can't go anywhere without seeing a bunch of white kids walking around talking and dressing like they're african american. I know its all because rap music is popular, but did you see black people in the 60's dressing like the Beatles??? NOOOOO! Why can'y white kids today act and dress like white people why do they think they have to try to "fit into" a culture they aren't from and I'm sure don't understand. It just baffles me. Anyone else bothered by this??

I concur! I would also like to See you damn non-irismen quit stealing our holiday! Everyone seems to be Irish on Saint Patties! It's our Drinkfest back off!

Yeah, and you're probably not Irish if it's only a drinkfest for ya!
This is my problem with nationalities. See, you're from Manitoba, and I am willing to lay odds that you were borin in Manitoba, therefore, you're Canadian. Just because one of your family members might have come from Ireland at some point doesn't make you Irish. If you or your parents were born in Ireland, that would make you Irish. My great-grandpa was Irish, so does that make St. Patrick's Day anymore my holiday than yours? No. It should only be for people from Ireland, not morons that just want to drink green beer for a day.
The end.

St. Patrick's Days has become a marketed holiday just like Christmas and Easter. We can have another argument on the fact whether or not only Christians should celebrate Christmas or Easter but that could go on and on...
The above article is absolutely ridiculous! Have they considered that there are other national histories besides Black history? What do they have to say about that? Are people of that race or nationality the only ones who can qualify for that? Considering the fact that African-Americans are treated as equally as whites...just see how many all African-American type cast shows there are...tune into Muchmusic or MTV...there are TONS of artists who are black...I don't understand why they are always trying to bring up these racial issues. I pity all the Hispanic, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, etc. people who don't get heard or who aren't given half the credit as African-Americans are.
