Ban Boxing?

So, by now you may or not be aware of the story of Stacy Young, the mother who was beaten to death in 3 rounds of a Toughman competiton, which is basically everyman's boxing.

Let's start the discussion there - why did she die? obviously she was getting her ass kicked, where was her trainer to throw in the towel? why didn't the ref stop the fight? you can't blame the other fighter, the woman was trying to win, she's not going to stop until they tell her too.

Anyway, now Sports Illustrated columnist Kostya Kennedy says that ALL of boxing, and not just Toughman competitions, should be banned.

Kostya Kennedy - Taking Sides

So, fans of boxing - got an opinion on this?

If you're dumb enough to want to box, I say go for it. I mean, everything has a risk of death associated with it.

that was my thinking too. every action, including stepping outside, increases your risk of death.

Yes, well, we all should know that the media makes outrageous clames to get themselves noticed. Ban boxing. Right. While we're at it, why don't we ban women's basketball, women's soccer, and the NHL, they're killing TV time and ratings. What a dumb fuck.

back in the mid 90's there was a string of deaths in Boxing itself. Jimmy Garcia passed away and it was like not even 3 months later gerald McClellan was beaten into the state he is in today. (paralized, blind, deaf in one ear, and slurred talking) People were constantly demanding that boxing go away but the simple truth is hey, these are athletes that choose to fight. no one makes them, they choose this path. now toughman is just ridiculous. these are normal people, that (to the best of my knowledge) don't have to pass any type of physical. there's no mandate or governing body to preform such tasks. in other words, leave it to the athletes that want to do this.

Exactly. If you choose to participate in that, face the consequences, although death is a extremely large consequence.

Does anyone here know about Hobo Boxing? Now that is just fun to watch. My friend Aaron bought a tape of it, and there are these hobos fighting for a prize of food and liquor. It was sad, but in a demented way, really fucking funny.

i've heard about it. sounds really sad. its cruel to make homeless people hurt each other for necessities of life.

i'm not even going to dignify hobo-boxing by talking about it. Klitchko kicked Lennox Lewis's ass all over the place, damnded cut!

Lewis better retire while he's still the champ.

Klitchko was laying a hurt on him.

he's no where near the greatest heavyweight champ ever. i wish those guys at HBO would stop trying to make him sounds like that. the heavyweight division is by far the most watered down division in boxing right now.

I was watching the guys on TSN and they were saying they think Lewis could hang with Ali & other past great champions.

Pardon me while i hurl. Lennox is good but the greatest ever? what in hell are they smoking?

If I may be intrude.... I wouldn't exactly say Ali was the greatest ever either.

Ali in his prime would kick the hell out of Lewis in his prime, that's for sure. so who do you think is the greatest heavyweight of all time corey? i actually have never thought of it much.

I don't really know for sure but from my understanding, Ali won a lot of matches he probably shouldn't have. He's really taken a beating through his career which is why he's in the condition he is today.

I agree, though. Ali would beat the hell out of Lewis.

yeah but he spent most of his prime years in jail. lord knows what he would have done if he fought during this time. I'll go as far as to say Mike Tyson in his prime would have kicked Lewis's ass. (and this is Tyson pre-meltdown.) although Tyson fought bunch of old timers in his day too.

Yeah... Tyson was good. I watched that fight where he knocked the guy out in 8 seconds. I felt ripped off.
