Seriously, this is stupid. Kids who are obese because of over-eating/poor eating habits aren't fat because of a blue puppet with googly eyes. They're fat because their parents give them cookies and chocolate instead of bothering to teach them proper eating habits.

I think you've got it wrong there, Robbo. No one is suggesting that kids are fat BECAUSE of cookie monster. They're just using Sesame Street as the educational tool it has always been to address current issues that are extremely important to children.

Scott Kurtz, however, is a genius as usual. I love the last panel

Obesity due to cookie consumption is not a current issue.

And, just like the cookie monster didn't create obese children, a cookie-less monster (or a somewhat-less-enthusiastic-about-cookies monster) won't help it.

regardless of who created the issue, sesame street is an educational tool watched by kids at a very formulative age in their lives.
the blue googly kid may not strictly say "get fat and eat cookies" but they think "oh hes doing it.. i have to now too"
while the onus does fall on the parent to raise their kids properly, if the show had the googly kid promoting proper eating habits it could make a difference

I understand the motivation to do it. I'm just indignant that they'd have the nerve to change the cookie monster. It's just wrong.

it seems to me like hardly a drastic change. sesame street has been through worse ()

i'm sure they could introduce a "healthy" character, or incorporate it into the show some other way.

cookie monster was untouchable.

I totally read about this a few days ago, because I showed Monkey this and it reminded him of it:

Oh yes, also. I'm not going to be the first one to post the horribly relevant new emoticon I added a few days ago. So someone else find it. :P
