Well there's links up there that I posted earlier .. as well as professional athletes from all sports up above .. including pro body builders, wrestlers, baseball players etc etc ... not to mention 3 articles in support of vegetarian diets for athletes and if you click the link for the LJ discussion there's quotes from athletes etc. The athletes who are saying they weren't getting enough iron were obviously doing something wrong or not eating the proper foods ... iron is one of the easiest things to obtain through eating right without the use of meat. Take a look at the articles .. by doctors.

I was wondering (I'm not trying to start shit, I'm just curious to your view), plants are also living things, do they not deserve proper treatment like animals do?

oh please .. tell me you aren't serious  You know how many people ask that?

There is currently no reason to believe that plants experience pain, devoid as they are of central nervous systems, nerve endings, and brains. It is theorized that the main reason animals have the ability to experience pain is that it serves as a form of self-protection. If you touch something that hurts and could possibly injure you, you will learn from the pain it produces to leave it alone in the future. Since plants cannot locomote and do not have the need to learn to avoid certain things, this sensation would be superfluous. If one is concerned about the impact of vegetable agriculture on the environment, a vegetarian diet is still preferable to a meat-based one, since the vast majority of grains and legumes raised today are used as feed for cattle. By eating vegetables directly, rather than eating animals such as cows, who must consume 16 pounds of vegetation in order to convert them into 1 pound of flesh, one is saving many more plants' lives (and destroying less land).

i didn't say it was manditory for life, i said it was good for you. as in not eating meat isn't going to kill you, but it's a good source for those supplements.

Actually, if you had bothered to read my post and check out the link of all the people I provided you would have noticed that CARL LEWIS IS A VEGETARIAN

no way, he's not a vegitarian.....is he? he wasn't on the posted list anyway.

ok, here's another question......how many World Boxing champions were vegitarian? eh? eh? boxers are the best athletes. you name me one world champion rightnow that's a vegitarian, and i'm sold!

* Donnie LaLonde (Former Light Heavyweight Champion of the World. (Lost title to Sugar Ray Leonard))

If I had more time I'd point out more .. and yes Carl Lewis was on the list if you had bothered to check the link.

I'm not sure if somebody mentioned this already, but Joey, don't you have to take pills to compensate for not eating meat?

Posted: 10/11/2003, 4:46 pm
by Joey
I take a multi-vitamin if that's what you're referring too .. it's not necessary though .. it was mentioned many times before .. there's nothing in meat I can't get through other foods ..

Donnie LaLonde you say...? he's no Roberto Duran, but he's pretty good.

ok, you've kind of sort of convinced me that vegitarians have their share of athletes. i'll still stick to my seasoned meats.

the fact is, animals eat other animals. this is simple, undeniable fact. it's a part of nature. humans are animals. we are biologically equipped with the tools to eat meat. our bodies were designed to be omnivorous. as a species, we are biologically the single best hunters in the world. does that not speak to you in some way?

Ah, yes. So you bring an interesting point. But there is something you are forgetting. Humans ARE an animal, but, we are the most intelligent animal. We are smart enough to survive without eating meat, if that's what we believe is the ethical and healthy choice.

sure. however, i still see no logical reason to decry meat eating as immoral. it is a biological reality.

whether or not you choose to eat meat is a value judgement based on your own personal ethics. my argument is that those who crusade against it (PETA, for example) or those who imply that animals have the right not to be eaten, are incorrect.

eating meat is like being gay. it's a personal issue.

I don't think eating meat is wrong. I agree with you that humans were meant to eat meat. However, the idea of factory farms sickens me, and that is the main reason I am a vegetarian. That said, I also agree with you that dietary decisions are a personal issue, and I do not try to force vegetarianism on anyone. Like Joey, I just try to explain to people why I've made this choice.
