Okay Johnny. Here are a few suggestions.
First older movies (Not newer releases)
Drama: Dirty Pretty Things. The name might make it sound lame, but this is one of my favourite movies. I won't give plots as that'll take too long, so just look up plots on imdb.com if you don't want to just blindly trust my suggestions. City of God (a brazilian film, but it's awesome), The Shawshank Redemption, Punch Drunk Love, Lucky Number Slevin, you know what there are waaay too many dramas for me to cover. I'll leave it at that.
Comedy: The Rage In Placid Lake (this is an australian film, so if you can't find it, that's to be expected.) Two I'd recommend, which you've probably seen, but if you haven't, Clerks and The Big Lebowski. If you've seen both of those, then a one you might not have seen but you should, is My Cousin Vinny.
Action/Adventure: Casino Royale (the new one), Apocalypse Now (more of a war drama, but amazing), Miami Vice, Kill Bill, Leon: The professional (kinda drama-ish again, but about a hitman taking in a little girl who's family is killed), Assault on Precinct 13,
Horror/Thriller: Identity, Saw (the first one), 28 days later, Dawn Of The Dead (the remake) you might like the older zombie ones, George A. Romero did a good job with them, they're just much lower budget and cheesier due to being so old. and.... From Dusk Till Dawn.
Other movies, that I'd personally classify under drama, but contain a lot of genres in them:
Magnolia, Donnie Darko, Memento, Requiem For A Dream, The Machinist, A Clockwork Orange, Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, Stranger Than Fiction
Sci-fi: Serenity (which you've pretty much definitely seen since you've watched firefly), The Omega Man (Must see, if you want to see I AM LEGEND), The Thing, 12 Monkeys, Vanilla Sky, Abre Los Ojos (the original spanish version of what became Vanilla Sky)
and for newer movies
Drama: Reign Over Me (See this one for sure), The Departed, Sicko (the michael moore documentary, i just didn't want to add a section for docs), Alpha Dog, The Last King Of Scotland, Talk To Me
Comedy: Superbad (on dvd soon), Knocked up, I now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry... honestly, there aren't too many good NEW comedies that are already on dvd...
Action/Adventure: Smoking Aces, Oceans 13, Live Free Or Die Hard, Transformers, Rescue Dawn,
Horror/Thriller: 28 Weeks Later, 30 Days of Night (not on DVD for a while)
Porno:
....................Just Kidding!

It's the true story of how a kid in a poor area of brazil that they call the city of god, grows up in between gang wars, drug dealing, basically living in the slums and he becomes a fairly famous photographer.
