Now there is a lawsuit to remove beams that remain from the WTC wreckage from the memorial because they happen to resemble a cross. I seriously don't understand these people!

I'm not even ready to discuss that one. That is just fucking absurd.

Yeah. A check of CNN, FoxNews, MSNBC, Fark, Slashdot, and a google search all turned up nothing. Explain?

well, that article is from WND, and those people are CRAZY. I'm not saying there's no lawsuit, because it's clear that there is, but i think that (so far) the only people who care are these Athiests and the guys at WND.

you're probably right. I would hope this suit doesn't hold up.

It depends on how they want to display this "cross". If they intend to display it religiously, I'd think that was in poor taste. If it's just like "woo, look at the rubble", then interpret it at will.

I'm not too sure how they display should matter at all. It's privately-owned property.

If that's the case, then they can do what they want.
I think it's time I rounded up my fellow atheists and gave them a lesson on how to pick battles.

Yeah, still going with the "no."
"The organization American Atheists is protesting a proposal to use a large steel cross found in the rubble of the World Trade Center in a memorial to victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks."
They don't want to tear down beams from the wreckage, they want to keep said beams from being turned into religious monuments that endorse one religion over others.
That being said, the WTC is private property (I think, I guess it is the WORLD trade center, I wonder....hmm. One second. Hey, lookit that.
Not private property. Who knew? Anyway), since it is some form of public property, the notion of keeping a cross out of the building does have some backing to it.
Anyway, you were still wrong, since they're not suggesting tearing down beams that "happen to resemble crosses." They're talking about preventing the building of a monument that honors only the Christians who died in the attacks. And that is really rather crude of the supporters of the cross. I mean c'mon.

No, Narbus. Actually, YOU are wrong:
http://www.newsday.com/business/printed ... ss-archive
In late April, New York developer Larry A. Silverstein negotiated a hard-fought winning bid for the famous Twin Towers, two office buildings and a retail mall. The deal, which put the complex under private ownership, closed seven weeks ago.
And yes, the beams HAPPEN to look like a cross. I'm pretty sure the survivors had more to worry about than constructing a cross out of the remaining wreckage during the event.
Also, who says the memorial would ONLY be for Christians? (besides racist atheists)

Huh. What'dya know. It is private now.
Well then more power to whoever owns it if they want to to this. They own the land, let them do what they want.
A few points though:
Your original statement made it sound like beams that just happened to land appeared to form crosses, and for some reason people were horribly offended by the random shapes. This is not what happened. Someone found a cross, and used it to create a "shrine" of sorts. Your original statement was misleading.
Also a cross is purely a relic of the christian faith. So trying to honor the muslim, islamic, athiest and other non-christians who died by putting up a cross in their honor is similar to erecting the star of david, a crescent moon, or such. If people want to memorialize the victims of the attacks there really are many better ways to go about it, in my opinion.
