it depends entirely upon your audience. michael moore delivered that same speech at some indie awards show or something along those lines the week before and was applauded.

I see it as there are times and places where one should kiss ass. Graduations are one of them. That's all.

I don't think you should kiss ass. I believe the goal of public speaking is to invoke thought and to change the views of your audience. This can only be achieved without insult. If one believed their classmates were uninteresting, uneducated, and unenlightened, then the speaker must provides insight on how everyone could improve without degrading them. That's just my opinion.

On the other hand, I did find the prepared speech mildly amusing.

Bah, I woulda still gone with the status quo. There's no point in intentionally hurting people's feelings (even if they didn't take it that way) when you're never going to see them again anyway. That's diplomacy.
