Throughout the world, from South Africa to Northern Ireland, movements of oppressed people continue to use tactics and words borrowed from our abolitionist and civil rights movements.

Anti-communists meetings in east germany were well known to have begun in the singing of 'we shall overcome'.

Iranians used nonviolent methods borrowed from Thoreau and M.L.K.Jr. to overthrow their hated shah.

On Ho CHi Minh's desk in Hanoi on the day he died was a biography of John Brown.

The ideas that inspired the students in Tienanmen Square come from Lincon's lips.

these ideas are celebrated around the world, and well known, yet here in the states we can't quote John Brown from memory. try to look for a quote from John Brown in your history textbooks. you won't find much.

As awareness of the cruelties of Apartheid in South Africa surfaced in the US, outraged citizens lead to the boycott of commerce with that region. Economically the British occupiers suffered and it forced changes in the law. Sometimes you just have to hit them where it hurts most.... the wallet.

America is still one of the most racist countries in the world. Just because a ew men have stood out and said a few memorable quotes doesn't mean that these examples are following in America's footsteps.

this isn't a gift to americans by americans, it's a gift by americans to the world. Textbooks in this country won't make heros out of John Brown, MLK Jr., but they'll make heros out of christ columbus and andrew jackson, and woodrow wilson.

anti-racism isn't a gift any country can give to the world, its a gift every individual can give to others, by showing their smarter than judging people based on race or religioun or for any other reason. racism is just plain stupid, but so is claiming that one country gave the gift of anti-racism to the world

Well being Canadian I don't know what they put in your textbooks. I have heard rumours that some of those books claim you guys won the war of 1812 but other than that I have no clue what you guys learn.

we did win the war of 1812, depending on how you look at it, if you look at it from a different point of view you could say america won, but canada really won

The American forces didn't even come close to meeting their goals in invading Canada. Therefore, they lost.

On the other hand, they got to taste some Canadian (aka real) beer. So it was really just a good time all around.

thats how we won, we got the americans so drunk on our good beer, they couldn't remember what they had to do so we won

It was painted white because it's easy to whitewash over soot.

it's not actually anti-racism that is the actual gift, its the fact that many great ideas and examples came forth from the anti-slavery movement. these great ideas are used constantly as a blueprint on how to start a movement by the oppressed and the minority all over the world. the world looks at our example and admire the efforts and actions of these men. we don't have a need to look and admire such actions simply because we aren't oppressed.

a few of our textbooks consider it a win, others don';t mention the overall outcome, but they mention the battle of New Orleans in signifigant detail. by actual historians accounts, the war of 1812 was a stalemate. we failed to properly invade Canada, but our navy proved to be superior. Brititsh took washington but were turned awat at baltimore. the battle at lake champlain ends the invasion. british had a few wins in the early part of the war, but towards the end they were on the run. it's no wonder they signed the treaty of Ghent, what with Napoleon raising hell in europe. by the way, most troops from britian were already battle tested, where as the US was by no means a a legitimate super power. :P to end in a stalemate basically legitimized both countries. (US and Canada)

Ya I live on the Canadian/US border where many of the battles took place. It was clearly a stalemate, but we (as the decendents of the british) claim it as a victory since it was a failed American attempt at invasion.

Sure racism is still a factor in the US but it is by NO means "one of the most racist countries in the world". There are dozens of countries where racism is still a part of the law unlike the US.
