i dont really subscribe to hick magazines or anything, but i dont really think that confederate flags mean you want to enslave black people. it just means they have pride in the south. i dont think its that big of a deal. actualy, i think the confederates were bad-asses, they left the union. hehe.

They had a point about federal government vs. state government. But I really don't think leaving the union is or was the way to go. The confederate flag doesn't represent slavery, that is just what the whole civil war/confederate flag has turned into for most Americans. Still, if that is what it means to most Americans, then you gotta think that is why people put it on their cars.

Put one up on your car, and see what happens.

The point: Words are nothing but symbols for other concepts. Symbols have no meaning beyond that which people give to them. It follows, then, that people can change the meaning of symbols.

Just because it didn't always represent slavery doesn't mean it can't now.

That's a little different Narbus. The swatsika is equivalent to a KKK flag. These flags represent organizations which follows that they represent the beliefs of those organizations. We're not talking about a KKK flag here, we're talking about a flag that represents a Union. Much like the Canadian flag.

Not that different.
The Civil War was primarily about the rights of states over the rights of the federal government, yes. However, one of those rights was the right to own slaves, and it was at the end of the war that the emanicpation proclimation was signed.

Like it or not, the Civil War and slavery have become inextricibly linked in the minds of many people, just as the Swastika and the Jewish Holocaust have been.

Very well. I retract my statements. If the confederate flag means racism to the majority, then I suppose there is nothing that can be said to reverse that. However, when I see it, the first thing in my mind isn't "That person hates blacks!" That hardly seems fair. The only reason I butted in is because of statements like this:

To me, that seems obscenely inconsonant.

This thread started complaining about a person with a bumper sticker that wished death apon a type of people (I might note that it wasn't specific about which group, I took it as terrorists) yet it is ok to wish death apon confederate flag bearers. How terribly ironic.
