Can anyone tell me what the fuck a buffer overflow is?!

Whenever I get one, my McAfee software stops them, but I still run into trouble because the folders on my desktop won't open up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffer_overflow

Basically X application is ready to accept say 100k of data
Well Y application is sending it 500k

Or say the kid @ Mcdonalds puts a small cup under the soda fountain and hit's the large cup button on the dispenser.

Hence Buffler Overflow.

How can I prevent them from happening?

[00:42] sandnippy: correct me if im wrong but there are no known forms of asexual or sexual reproduction in terms of hard drive space right?
[00:56] rochyorbust: hahahahhahaha i don't think so
[00:57] sandnippy: i see... thats what i thought too
[00:57] rochyorbust: what a horrible end to THAT movie! oy
[00:57] sandnippy: :O
[00:57] sandnippy: i still have no clue if i saw it
[00:57] rochyorbust: haha
[00:57] rochyorbust: main character's played by ben affleck

[00:59] sandnippy: anyways... the reason i ask about hd space... remember how i said i had like 800 mbs?
[00:59] rochyorbust: haha grew, eh?
[00:59] sandnippy: yeah
[00:59] sandnippy: 1.17 gb
[00:59] rochyorbust: i've had that happen, too... no idea how
[00:59] sandnippy: i dont remember deleting anything
[00:59] sandnippy: at all
[00:59] sandnippy: unless i was sleep-computer-cleaning
[00:59] rochyorbust: my guess is it was reading wrong for some reason, then somehow realized it
[01:00] rochyorbust: hahaha perhaps you were!
[01:00] sandnippy: for that to work i'd have to reboot tho haha
[01:00] sandnippy: oh wait... i rebooted on thursday
[01:00] rochyorbust: hahahahha
[01:00] rochyorbust: wait this 800 reading was old?
[01:00] sandnippy: (prior to that... i hadnt rebooted in like... 2 weeks.. just stand by at most)
[01:00] sandnippy: no
[01:01] sandnippy: it was from whenever my last movie finished downloading
[01:01] sandnippy: which im fairly sure was wednesday or thursday
[01:01] rochyorbust: hahah that's old
[01:01] rochyorbust: new is like if you just look at it and tell me right then
[01:01] sandnippy: well in that case.. the new is 1.69 gb
[01:01] sandnippy: but thats because i deleted some stuff 20 mins ago
[01:02] sandnippy: im assuming the windows updates took up a huge amount of space temporarily and deleted them
[01:02] rochyorbust: then i think i know wheere the space came from!
[01:02] rochyorbust: that could very well be
[01:02] sandnippy: but the thing about that is
[01:02] sandnippy: the updates in total were like 40 mbs
[01:03] sandnippy: for all 11
[01:03] sandnippy: of em
[01:03] sandnippy: and we're talking a difference of roughly 300-400 mbs
[01:03] rochyorbust: but what did you delete?
[01:04] sandnippy: just now?
[01:04] rochyorbust: haha yeah
[01:04] sandnippy: ohhh haha.. i deleted some save games
[01:04] rochyorbust: ahh
[01:04] rochyorbust: did you happen to empty your recycle bin at any point?
[01:04] sandnippy: the game is great.. and i liked playing it but i found a save game editor and screwed it all up... (in that i could change things to amke it easier0
[01:04] sandnippy: nope
[01:04] sandnippy: )
[01:05] sandnippy: i did just run a "disk cleanup" and now i have 1.96 gb
[01:05] sandnippy: so its not that either
[01:05] sandnippy: it could very well be the fact i hadnt shut down/rebooted in so long the page file/temp use became astronomical
[01:05] sandnippy: and that space was freed up
[01:06] rochyorbust: hahahahhah
[01:06] sandnippy: but even then... 300-400 mbs?!
[01:06] rochyorbust: i think it'd take several years for that much space to be taken up
[01:07] sandnippy: you're assuming my comp is running at tip-top condition and performance :P
[01:07] rochyorbust: haha
[01:07] sandnippy: plus if xp does get below 1-2 gigs it does tend to have a noticeable drop in performance (especially when running 256mb of ram)
[01:08] rochyorbust: well yeah
[01:08] rochyorbust: any windows os should have a few gigs to run on
[01:08] rochyorbust: cept like... 3.1
[01:08] sandnippy: on my old comp (a p3 500 w/ 320 mbs of ram) i had to keep the hd space above like... 5-7 gigs or it'd slow down considerably
[01:08] rochyorbust: eesh
[01:09] sandnippy: this thing atleast has a 2 ghz mobile celery processor (but only 256 mb of ram as mentioned)
[01:09] sandnippy: I GOT IT!
[01:09] rochyorbust: :O
[01:09] sandnippy: i forgot to water the celery!
[01:09] rochyorbust: hahahahhahaa
[01:09] sandnippy: so the computer slowed down
[01:09] rochyorbust: that must be it
[01:09] sandnippy: and ate up the hd space
[01:09] sandnippy: for nutrients
[01:09] rochyorbust: always gotta water the celery
[01:10] sandnippy: and since it rebooted... it got the water content needed from the air
[01:10] sandnippy: since this is the rainy season and all
[01:10] rochyorbust: hahahahha
[01:10] sandnippy: either that or it'd explain why my bottle of water seemed to have less than before
[01:10] sandnippy: either/or
[01:10] rochyorbust: i think it grabbed it when you weren't looking
[01:10] sandnippy: i think so too
[01:11] sandnippy: this all makes so much more sense now
[01:11] rochyorbust: *nods*
[01:12] sandnippy: i wonder if this convo is worthy of a post on the cm
[01:12] sandnippy: but NOT in the "current aim convo" thread
[01:12] sandnippy: but the computer help thread
[01:12] rochyorbust: hahaha
[01:12] sandnippy: to see if anyone can figure out the hd space issue
[01:12] rochyorbust: well, everyone should be reminded to water their celery
[01:12] sandnippy: true... true
[01:12] sandnippy: so even if they dont know the answer
[01:12] sandnippy: they'll take care of their celery
[01:13] rochyorbust: *nods*
[01:13] sandnippy: an equally important issue

Has anyone used an HP LaserJet 1018 Printer before?

I found one on Overstock.com that's refurbished for $64.99 and am considering buying it for the fact that it's a cheap-ass laser printer. I don't like HPs, but if it's cheap and it works, that's all I really need.

Here's the link: http://www.overstock.com/Office-Supplie ... oduct.html

Comments anyone?

Yup, they are excellent. Its what I am using.
Toner is expensive, but I've had mine for a year and a bit and haven't had to change it once.

Yeah I've heard about the toner issue but I don't print 100 pages a day so I figure I should be fine with that.

Despite not being an HP fan, I'm willing to shell out the bucks for a laser.

Man.... thats really not expensive for a printer. I only paid $90 for a new one. $70 for refurbished isnt that great.
And HP is a good brand in printers. I hate them in terms of computers and digital cameras and so on, but with printers they do a good job.

And really, when it comes to printers you get what you pay for. $100 is a decent price to pay. If you get some $40 one its gonna be worth nothing. If you get a crazy expensive one, it will be a printer, scanner, copier, photo printer etc. So yeah, that one is a good one to get.

Well that's why I asked about this one - because it is cheap, and I didn't want to get a crappy printer when I could spend another $30 or $40 and get one that will last me a hell of a lot longer.

Wait till Black Friday and see what deals come out on printers then.

If your going to buy a refurn check the details on the warranty and return policy.

Shipping could kill a deal too.

Find something good at Staples then use a $30 of $100 coupon or something like that.

buy some sharpies and just write or draw what you'd normally print.

I was looking on Overstock because they had $1 shipping, but that expires today.
And I was going to wait until Black Friday but I'm sick of printing on my piece of shit printer and figured if I could get a good deal I might as well buy now.

Send me a file, I'll print it off at work then mail you the hardcopy using the pitney bowes machine.

We have a bunch of use it/loose it postage to use in the next 2 months before we close.

I would do that, but I generally wait until the night before my papers are due to finish and print them :P
