Umm, fairly recently I think. I might add, he had a cold or something and he said his throat was really sore when he was sick.

Hmmm well I really don't think that its cancer, so tell your friend he's over reacting. My guess is that it could be a boil, cyst, abcese or even a big ass pimple. OR there could just be hardend fat under his skin in that area. My friend had that.

It might be a swollen lymph node from when he was sick and it needed to fight the infection. Whereabouts on his neck is it exactly? In my experience (and I think this is generally true too) cancerous lumps don't hurt and non-cancerous ones do. But he should still get it checked out. Let us know what it turns out to be.

Umm it's like just under his jaw bone on the side of his neck, under the ear...you know where i'm talking?

That sounds like a swollen gland to me.

Probably, but it's like a large lump in one area, not the whole part.

I've just been to my favourite neck lymph node website (i'm having most or all of mine removed next weekend so I've been there a few times before) and not only is there a lymph node/gland where you're saying but it confirms my 'cancerous lymph nodes don't hurt but infection-fighting ones do' comment from earlier. When's your friend seeing a doctor?
